Auto class is a great way to keep your engine running

Mason Nichols

Most every high school offers an automotive program, but should you take the class? The answer is, yes. In a survey of 2,000 car owning Americans done by “America’s Automotive IQ: Analyzing Automotive Knowledge in the U.S” 42.2% of people were completely confident they could change a flat tire, 17% were somewhat confident, 19% were not very confident, and 21.8% were clueless. If these percentages are the same for the total population in the U.S. that would mean about 134,269,988 people in the United States are not very confident or clueless about how to change a tire, that is almost half of the population. If you get a flat tire and are sitting on the side of the road you would either have to wait for a good Samaritan to come and help you or call someone and pay them to do it. However, you could be on your way in 10 minutes free of charge if you simply just learn to do it yourself. Aside from changing your tires taking an automotive class teaches you how to check and fill fluids and a bunch of simple repairs you can do yourself.

I asked Travis Crouch who graduated from Petoskey High School last year and is currently in college to pursue his career in automotive, what the benefits of taking an automotive class are he said: “The class teaches you how to keep your car in good condition and save money by doing it yourself”. I also asked Adam Hausler, the man that runs the automotive program at Petoskey High School, for his views on the topic and he said “It is important that every kid takes an auto class because everyone is going to own a car one day and next to your house that is your biggest investment. Since a car is your second biggest investment you need to learn how to keep it in good condition and how to tell if there is a problem or the start of a problem because that can snowball into something major down the road. Plus, learning preventative maintenance saves you money in the long run”. In conclusion, the main benefits of taking an automotive class in high school is that you learn simple ways to take care of your car it will last you a long time and you can save a lot of money in the long run.
